Chinese New Year is the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays. It is often called the Lunar New Year, especially by people in mainland China and Taiwan. The festival traditionally begins on the first day of the first month in the Chinese calendar and ends on the 15th; this day is called Lantern Festival. Chinese New Year's Eve is known as Chúxī. It literally means "Year-pass Eve". Celebrated in areas with large populations of ethnic Chinese, Chinese New Year is considered a major holiday for the Chinese and has had influence on the new year celebrations of its geographic neighbours, as well as cultures with whom the Chinese have had extensive interaction.

According to tales and legends, the beginning of Chinese New Year started with the fight against a mythical beast called the Nian or "Year" in Chinese. Nian would come on the first day of New Year to devour livestock, crops, and even villagers, especially children. To protect themselves, the villagers would put food in front of their doors at the beginning of every year. It was believed that after the Nian ate the food they prepared, it wouldn’t attack any more people. One time, people saw that the Nian was scared away by a little child wearing red. The villagers then understood that the Nian was afraid of the color red. Hence, every time when the New Year was about to come, the villagers would hang red lanterns and red spring scrolls on windows and doors. People also used firecrackers to frighten away the Nian. From then on, the Nian never came to the village again. The Nian was eventually captured by Hongjun Laozu, an ancient Taoist monk. The Nian became Hongjun Laozu's mount.

1) What did Dr K.K Seet thinks of students using the SMS language in their schoolwork and teachers-pupil relationship ?

4) How did Nicholas's mother react to her son's using SMS language ? Give her contrasting views .

Ans:

1) He don't agree on students using SMS language in their homework . He believes that there should be a certain degree of social decorum and such SMS language would take student-teacher relationship to a level of casualness . He also thinks that using these abbreviations would destroy the visual qualities of the words .

2) She wrote to The Strait Times complaining that SMS language has been repeatedly screened in the sms bar during the weekly episodes of America Idol on channel 5 . She thinks that such messages should not be broadcast on national TV as an English-language station should promote good english to the audience .

3) Nicholas spelt "rocks" as "rawks" because he feels the creative spelling will make the words more aesthetically pleasing . It was partly his habit too .

4) Nicholas 's mother , madam Tan Kim Peng , thinks that it's alright for teenagers using SMS language . She said that "it is in thing for teenagers who are used to short forms ." She added , "however , when they start writing , they know they have to use good English ."

Ans :
1) The message of the video is 'To treasure what we have now and also to spread love and care to the poors . And it's never too late to make a difference .'

2) firstly , they never give up . Secondly , they don't have clean water to drink and not much food there . They might die of hunger . Thirdly , they lived in such a old and dirty hut . It's very unhygienic too . They might get ill easy due to their living conditions .

3) I can donate some foods for them and also donate some unwanted things such as clothes , books and etc ..
